Eek We’ve Just Got Engaged!

By Lucy Wright Events, Wedding Planning & Design

Congratulations on your engagement….Now where do you start! Firstly enjoy the moment, tell everyone and if you have your ring show it off, relish the attention. Once you have lowered yourself off cloud nine, write down your visions for your wedding BUT write them separately without looking and then swap over…this way you will understand what each other want from the day. Ask yourself not only what type of venue do you want, what your budget is, what style of wedding but also who do you want there, what is the most important part of the day for you and how you can portray both your personalities into the day!

Many brides already have a vision for their perfect wedding day but so do some grooms, so don’t forget to talk about what you both want before you start having to deal with what your families want too! Be honest and discuss who is going to pay for what parts of the day and start working out your overall budget. (Try online for a full list of potential suppliers that you could have at your wedding, it’s amazing what you forget when thinking about what’s involved). Most couples don’t know how much a good photographer is and what a three course menu costs but if you have an overall budget you can divide up your total expenditure once you gain a better understanding of the individual suppliers costs. Start to buy some wedding magazines to inspire you and to not only find what you do like but just as importantly what you both don’t like!

Family and friends can be great for advice at this stage and don’t forget they will be happy for you both and excited about your forthcoming wedding, so allow them to offer advice, help, ideas and even their own wedding planning experiences.

The best way to celebrate your engagement and let everyone know is have an engagement party / get-together! This is something you should plan together and if you can host it at home it will save on the pennies too! Many couples choose to do an evening drinks party but don’t forget there are alternatives……Summer champagne picnics, lunch party, hire a private room at a hotel / restaurant,  party bus, BBQ party, wine tasting party, or a beach party!

Getting engaged is an exciting time, enjoy it, love it, savour every moment!

Best wishes
